Spotting bats at Fort Giessen during National Bat Night

On Friday, August 21, Altenatuur and Archeo Altena are jointly organizing an evening event focused on bats at Fort Giessen. Visitors will explore the fort, listen to a presentation, and use a bat detector to search for bats.
The evening begins with a visit to the winter roost inside the fort. Visitors will learn about the fort’s historical function and get a glimpse of the places where bats spend the winter.
This will be followed by a presentation on bats, featuring general information and the results of bat surveys conducted in the region.
As soon as dusk falls, the group takes a walk around the fort. Using a bat detector, participants “listen” to identify which species are flying. Children ages 8 and up are welcome.
The event will take place at Fort Giessen, Giessensesteeg 2 in Giessen. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the event begins at 7:45 p.m. Parking is available in the spacious lot to the right of the fort.
