The Milk River of Altena

Long ago, monks settled in the area around Wijk en Aalburg, Genderen, and Babyloniënbroek because of the fertile soil. To this day, livestock farming remains widespread in this region, and farmers still tend to the “milk artery” that flows into the Netherlands.

Explore the many small roadside stalls in this area, where local products are sold. Discover the farmland along the Biesbosch Line. Hop on a bike and ride your own “Milky Way.”

Park at the De Kromme Nol parking lot/bus station, 4261 AN in Wijk & Aalburg. The parking lot is located on the N831 and next to the N267.

Junction 65: De Twee Gebroeders Windmill

Along the dike, you’ll pass Molen De Twee Gebroeders. If it’s turning, it’s open—definitely worth a visit. Here, grain is milled on a professional basis. Be sure to stop by Bakkerij Hardeman, where you can sample authentic organic bread.

Junction 62 The Honeybin

At number 53 on Veldstraat, you’ll find The Honeybin, a small shop filled with honey and bee products.

Just past junction 62 (100 meters from the route), you’ll find Buffelgaard Verschure. This farm has a milk bar that’s always open, as well as a small shop selling buffalo products and other local specialties. In this polder, you’ll cycle past many livestock farms.

Junction 67: Honey, Fruit, and Eggs

If you cycle 100 meters to the left after the forest path (Midgraaf 34), you’ll often be
offered honey and fruit. At Midgraaf 32, at the Pruijssen family’s farm
, eggs are often offered.

Junction 53: vegetables, apple juice, and walnuts

At number 64 on Broeksestraat, there’s a street stall selling vegetables, apple juice, and walnuts.

Junction 57 Farm Stand

At the farm located at Molensteeg 5, there is a farm vending machine offering dairy products, eggs, soft drinks, and fruit.

Junction 59 Camping De Speeltol

A place to rest or stay a while. This is also a sales location for honey from Wim Bax, the beekeeper from Eethen.
