Castles
Few buildings evoke such a medieval atmosphere as castles. Magical and tough at the same time and full of stories. The Biesboschlinie has two: one a strategic knight's castle and the military fortified town of the Dutch Water Line, the other a fairytale castle with moat in the middle of a vast polder landscape.
Slot Loevestein has been watching over Maas and Waal since 1361. From toll station to state prison and the military fortified town of the Dutch Waterline. This sturdy castle was one with numerous functions. Today, Slot Loevestein is part of Unesco World Heritage and the gunpowder fumes have cleared.
The castle has an eventful history: wars, floods and many different families have left their mark. Now the gates are wide open for cultural tours.
Cultural education
Cultuurpunt Altena organizes various activities and projects so that residents learn about all forms of art and culture. They do this based on the idea: if you know more about art, heritage, media and books, you also better understand what is important to other people and cultures. They also help schools with cultural education through coaching and projects.
