Unique nature reserve
De Biesbosch National Park is a nature reserve of water, creeks, osier beds, willow forests, and islands. It is constantly changing under the influence of the water. It is Europe’s largest freshwater tidal area and lies on the border between North Brabant and South Holland.
Over the centuries, the landscape of the Biesbosch has been shaped by rivers and tides, but also by the way people have used and developed the area. For centuries, osier workers, reed cutters, fishermen, and farmers worked in the area. Dikes and polders were constructed, and parts of the Biesbosch were used for harvesting wood, reeds, and rushes. Later, the way we manage the area changed: more and more space is being given to water and nature.
Nature in the Biesbosch
De Biesbosch is rich in unique flora and fauna. The area is known for its beavers, among other things, but white-tailed eagles and many other bird species also live here. With a little luck, you’ll come face to face with the animals that call this water-rich area home during your walk or boat trip.

Go for a walk or bike ride through the water-rich landscape, or hop into a canoe or boat and explore the Biesbosch from the water. Along the way, you might encounter unique animals, such as beavers, roe deer, and countless species of birds.

The museum is also the ideal base during a visit to the Biesbosch. The podcast "Let the water splash" takes you through the nature, culture and history of National Park De Biesbosch. The episodes were recorded during a day of boating, so you can almost feel the stories.
The podcast is intended for anyone exploring the Biesbosch by canoe, whisper boat or sloop.
