Natural areas

The Biesboschlinie is rich in natural areas. Stichting Brabants Landschap, Stichting Altenatuur, Staatsbosbeheer and some private individuals take care of this beautiful landscape and the sometimes rare animal and plant species that live there. Thanks to their efforts, we can enjoy all this beauty.

And besides the natural areas, the windmills are also unmissable icons of this beautiful area. Once they ensured dry feet, today the millers still grind flour for the baker, and tell us the story of a rich history. So put on your walking shoes, climb on the saddle or get in your canoe, and marvel at all the beauty Altena nature has to offer.

QR Heritage Mill Trail

The millers are the ambassadors of the mills. With great knowledge, full of love and enthusiasm for 'their' mill and the miller's profession, they spend hours every week keeping the mills running and welcoming visitors. The QRfgoed Molentocht takes you past all the mills of Altena. Visit when the sails are turning - that's when the mill is open (often on Saturdays). There is nothing like seeing the mill "live" in operation and hearing the miller tell the story. Also get the route booklet with stamp card inside and collect all the mill stamps of Altena. Is the route too long for one day? The route can be done in parts, with the stamp card helping to keep track.

Do you find the miller 'not at home'? Then scan the QR codes at the mills. Each code links to a video that tells you everything you need to know about the mill you're standing in front of. The millers speak enthusiastically about their passion, about grinding grain, water management, the love of the miller's trade and the important function that mills had in the past.

The Biesboschlinie is rich in nature and culture, but also has a flourishing countryside, with a large and innovative agricultural and agri-food sector. Together with this sector, the municipality of Altena is moving towards "the meal of tomorrow. That is healthily produced, sustainably grown and comes from the farmer to your plate without waste.

The "Tasty Region" cycling tour introduces you to all the beauty our farmers have to offer - both beautiful local produce and stunning landscapes. We also tip you off to some initiatives where you can see, taste and experience the meal of tomorrow.
