Help the “ Biesbosch MuseumEiland ” win the VriendenLoterij Museum Prize 2026!
Great news from the Biesbosch: Biesbosch MuseumEiland has been selected by a panel of experts—from among dozens of entries—as a finalist for the 2026 VriendenLoterij Museum Prize in the “Green Museum” category. The museum will be competing against Forteiland Pampus and Museum De Bastei.
The expert jury praises Biesbosch MuseumEiland a sustainable DNA that stems from a deep-rooted intrinsic motivation. By directly weaving sustainability into daily practice and the landscape, the museum makes this topic tangible for every visitor. You can see and feel this everywhere on the island: from the sustainable architecture and the green roof to the recently opened pavilions, where visitors discover—through an immersive experience—what climate change means for the future of the Biesbosch.
Your vote counts!
The nationwide voting period runs through Friday, November 27. The museum plans to use the grand prize of €100,000 to create a free-access outdoor discovery area featuring, among other things, a barefoot trail and a climbing beaver lodge. In addition, they plan to invest in a future-proof pumping system to ensure that the popular Biesbosch Experience continues to be supplied with water even during dry summers.

Even more exciting news
The Altena War Museum is a finalist for the 2026 Heritage Volunteer Award and is thus representing all of North Brabant! A wonderful recognition for the 27 volunteers.
Since its opening in April 2025, more than 15,000 visitors have visited the museum. Behind this success is an enthusiastic group of volunteers who are dedicated, heart and soul, to keeping the history of World War II in Altena and the surrounding area alive. From historical research and collection management to education, technical support, and welcoming visitors—everyone contributes in their own way.
They also bring history to life outside the museum. For example, eleven crash memorials have now been erected in memory of the crew members who lost their lives during World War II. Through lectures, school visits, field trips, and Battlefield Tours, they share the stories of that era with people of all ages.
The 2026 Heritage Volunteer Award is determined by the public and a panel of experts. The public vote accounts for no less than 50% of the final assessment. Will you help them win? You can vote through December 1.
