The Almpad, walking along the water, Fort Giessen and meadows

| Lianne Verbeek-van Wette | Reading time: 2 minutes |

The Almpad, between Giessen and Uitwijk, was enthusiastically conceived and walked by our volunteer Lianne this spring. The walk takes you through the Almbos, along Fort Giessen, the small river Alm and through the outskirts of Giessen and Uitwijk.

For big and small adventurers

Although this route takes you mostly along paved roads and paths, the scenery and variety more than make up for that.
You start in Giessen at the Almbos, a watery planted recreational forest, with many willows, poplars and winding paths. For the little adventurers, you will find Gnome Route Almbos here.

Fort Giessen

Fort Giessen is the southernmost fort of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. A tour around the fort's moat, along the Koekkoekspad, is therefore not to be missed. If the gate is open, take a look! A volunteer will be happy to show you around the fort.

The Alm

Time to enter the countryside and continue walking along the Alm towards Uitwijk. The Alm was once a tributary of the Meuse. Nowadays the river is no longer connected to the larger rivers and has become a narrower, calmer water, which in some parts even looks more like a wide ditch.
It meanders idyllically through the polder landscape, its green banks offer an oasis for (water) birds and you can canoe beautifully.

Uitwijk

In Uitwijk you walk past the old church and via the nostalgic bandstand you leave the ancient village to walk back into the open polder landscape. On both sides you have panoramic views and if you look closely you can see the skyline of the fortified town of Woudrichem on the left.

The last kilometers

You leave the paved path behind you and walk along and across the Alm. Because of the rest area in this piece of nature you still have to walk a short distance along the through road before you can enter the Almbos again. Enjoy the last kilometers that again lead you along the Alm, because before you know it you are back at your car.
