Day trip Gorinchem and Slot Loevestein

Visit the largest fortified town and the most famous castle in the Netherlands in one day! You will walk through the fortified town, take a ferry or water cab across the river and visit Slot Loevestein, from which Hugo de Groot escaped in a book chest. Coffee and cake and a hearty lunch will keep you going. A fully catered and relaxing day out!

City tour Gorinchem

With the City Walk (3 km) you will visit the highlights of Gorinchem in one tour on your own, using our comprehensive leaflet. This folder contains a map with directions, photos and background information of the sights. The route starts at the Gorcums Museum at the Grote Markt 17.

Lunch: 12:30 p.m.

After the city walk, enjoy lunch at restaurant Metropole or Grand café 't Gelagh. Lunch includes coffee, tea, or soft drinks.

Crossing to Loevestein: 2:05 p.m.

Outside the Waterpoort, sail with Riveer by regular ferry or Watertaxi to Slot Loevestein.

Visit Slot Loevestein

Slot Loevestein is an impressive castle from the 14th century, beautifully situated in the river landscape and in the middle of nature. The castle has an important history as a medieval toll castle, fortified town and state prison. Its most famous prisoner was Hugo de Groot. He managed to escape from Loevestein in a book chest in 1621. Loevestein is now a national monument and museum. The complex was completely restored in the 20th century. The earthen walls, double moats, powder tower, arsenal, commander's house, tavern and the street with soldiers' houses take you centuries back in time. In the castle you can listen to short stories.

Crossing to Gorinchem. 4:15 or 5:15 p.m.

From Slot Loevestein , sail back to Gorinchem by ferry or Watertaxi with Riveer.
