Fort Steurgat
Fort Steurgat is a pentagonal fort island in the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, now a luxury residential island.
Fort Steurgat, located on the edge of National Park De Biesbosch near Werkendam, is a historic pentagonal fort island from 1881-1882. It was part of the New Dutch Waterline and served to defend the Merwede and Steurgat rivers. The fort is surrounded by a wide moat and houses, among other things, a large barracks and a depot with underground storage for gunpowder. After various military functions, the fort was converted into a luxury residential island with villas and apartments in 1994. It is not freely accessible, but guided tours are offered on Open Monument Day.
