Fort Altena
Fort Altena is a very special place, namely a cultural historical heritage. Fort Altena is part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and served to protect the 'Vesting Holland'.
Fort Altena is a historic fort in Werkendam and part of the New Dutch Water Line, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort was built between 1847 and 1850 and is the oldest of the four Brabant forts in the New Dutch Water Line. A distinctive feature is its round tower, making Fort Altena the only tower fort among these four.
Today, Fort Altena is a wonderful place to explore the heritage and landscape of the Biesbosch Line. There you’ll find a brasserie, ample parking, and information about nature, culture, and recreational routes in the area.

Fort Altena is an ideal starting point for a walk or bike ride through the countryside. Various walking, biking, and boating routes begin at the fort. Guided tours are also organized.
