Fort Bakkerskil is a historic fort located on the Kildijk, north of Nieuwendijk and southeast of Werkendam. The fort was built in 1879 as part of the New Dutch Water Line and was part of the defensive line intended to protect the Netherlands from enemy armies using water as a barrier.
Today, Fort Bakkerskil serves a new purpose. The historic fort houses a bed-and-breakfast where you can spend the night in a special setting right in the heart of the Biesbosch Line landscape.
The area around Fort Bakkerskil is also well worth exploring. From the fort, you can hike and bike through the rural countryside around Nieuwendijk and the Biesbosch. This makes it easy to combine a visit to the historic fort with exploring the nature and landscape of the Biesbosch Line.

From April through September, you’re also welcome to visit the terrace for lunch, ice cream, or a drink. The terrace is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Check our social media for information on the other months.
