Duyls Bos
Nature and cultural history center Duyls Bos is a gem in Altena. Where nature can amaze you and you can enjoy the flora of the Forest, while walking along footpaths or the ancient Hillse kade. While wandering you come across all kinds of buildings with things from the old days.
The Duyls Bos grew out of a plot of poplars that were used to make wooden shoes. The owners, Jan and Jenny van Mersbergen, have transformed it over 40 years into a paradise with various types of trees, water features and many flowers, birds and insects. In addition, wooded banks, sheep pastures, a grove, an alder bog forest, orchard, vegetable, ornamental and butterfly gardens have been created.
The ancient Hillse kade was later purchased and a few hundred years ago was the thoroughfare to Babyloniënbroek, where people rode along with horse and cart. Great that this piece of quay is still preserved and that you can sniff a piece of history there.

On either side of the Duyls Bos are leased plots of land, on which, among other things, there are old apple varieties and a bee and butterfly garden. There is also a real hop farm with 3 piles from which they harvest hops. They do this together with 30 hop farms in the municipality of Altena, after which local IPA is made!
Among other things, they have a museum house, old shoemaker's shop, bakery and a real field chapel. In the farm corner you will find tools from the old days and the display house has windows behind which you will discover everything from toys to cigar boxes. In the field chapel there is an opportunity to light a candle for a moment of reflection.
